The 48th Annual Condensed Matter and Materials Meeting in conjunction with the 6th Asia-Pacific Conference on Condensed Matter Physics is to be held 9-13 February 2026, in Wagga Wagga, NSW.

The Australian-New Zealand Annual Condensed Matter and Materials Conference, colloquially known as “Wagga”, has been held almost annually as a residential conference at the Charles Sturt University Conference Centre, Wagga Wagga, NSW, during early February, since 1977.  In 2026 we are welcoming members of the Asia-Pacific Condensed Matter Physics community to Australia!  The AIP is a member of the Association of Asia Pacific Physics Societies (AAPPS) supporting physics research and collaboration throughout the Aisa-Pacific region.  Since 2021, the AIP has also had representation on the executive committee of the AAPPS subgroup, the Division of Condensed Matter Physics.

The organising committee may be contacted via CMM-Wagga@aip.org.au.  We welcome suggestions and recommendations for invited and keynote speakers.  Contributed papers are encouraged in all areas of condensed matter and materials research.  Students are particularly encouraged to submit abstracts for oral presentations.

Members of the AIP and our  cognate and reciprocal societies receive discounted registration rates. If you are a member of a cognate or reciprocal society, but not a member of the AIP, please register your cognate/reciprocal membership here to enable access to the discounted rates.

The 48th Annual Condensed Matter and Materials Meeting in conjunction with the 6th Asia-Pacific Conference on Condensed Matter Physics is to be held 9-13 February 2026, in Wagga Wagga, NSW.

Whilst this meeting is a "residential conference" with enough single-bed accommodation onsite for all delegates, we understand that some people would prefer to stay off-site, in Wagga Wagga town centre.

However we have just learnt that due to a large sporting event, many of the hotels and motels in Wagga Wagga town centre have been booked for the night of Thursday 12th February.

If you and/or family members were planning to stay in Wagga Wagga town centre during the conference, you may have to check out on Thursday 12th February.  We can offer onsite accommodation to all those who cannot find accommodation for the night of the 12th February. Please note each room is single occupancy, with shared bathroom facilities.

Please contact the conference organisers for further information: CMM_Wagga@aip.org.au

    Dr Douglas Bock

Dr Douglas Bock is Director, Space and Astronomy, and Director of the Australia Telescope National Facility (ATNF). Douglas represents Australia on the Council of the SKA Observatory.

CSIRO's Space and Astronomy business unit leads CSIRO's activities in the space sector. It draws together NASA's Canberra Deep Space Communication Complex (operated by CSIRO), our Space Research Program and the CSIRO Centre for Earth Observation as well as CSIRO's radio astronomy activities (instrumentation, astrophysics research, SKA Observatory planning and pre-construction work, and the Australia Telescope National Facility).

From 2010 to 2016 Douglas was Theme Leader and then Program Director for ATNF Operations, leading the operation of the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASKAP), Parkes Telescope, Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA), and Mopra Telescope – which are used by more than 400 Australian and overseas scientists each year. He oversaw the transition of ASKAP and the Murchison Radio-Astronomy Observatory from construction to ASKAP early science. Douglas has also been active in planning for the international Square Kilometre Array project and looks forward to the opportunities ahead for Australia in radio astronomy, and working collaboratively with Australian Universities in evolving the role of the ATNF for the SKA era.

The Physics Research Poster Presentation Network Event will provide opportunities for HDR (Honours, Masters and PhD) students to present their research posters during the three-hour time-frame. Presenters can outline plans for research (thesis proposal) or can use this opportunity to display their research area, topic, present a working research paper, journal publication, conference publication, seminar notes or chapters in the thesis as a poster presentation display. Posters will be judged during the event with monetary prizes presented for each best poster award category.

    POSTER FORMAT:

    • A poster presentation is one where presenters post materials such as scans, photographs, maps, graphs, tables, and sparingly used equations on a display board together with textual summaries.
    • The sequence of the poster sections should be clearly indicated by numbers or arrows and follow a logical pattern.
    • Each poster should display the title, authors, supervisors and affiliations for the work. Title information is in larger font. Text fonts should be 20-24 point.
    • Extensive use of captioned illustrations, graphs, photographs or other visually appealing material is extremely useful as a means of communication.
    • The poster board size provided at this event will be 1.8 metres high by 1.2 metres wide. Presenters will bring own pins or Velcro strips to attach poster.
    • Choose a title that captures the reader’s attention and accurately reflects the contents of the poster.
    • Underline the presenting author’s name.
    • List the author’s main affiliated institutes/organisations and their locations.
    • State the aim(s)/purpose(s) of the project clearly.
    • Keep the methods section brief, unless the subject of your presentation is a description of a method. Dot points are satisfactory.
    • Use the main part of the poster area for the results section of your material. Use graphics, pictures, figures and/or tables to illustrate your findings.
    • Briefly discuss the implications of your work, the highlights and problems encountered.
    • Briefly summarise your findings and the main conclusions drawn from your study.
    • Keep literature citations to a minimum.

From the Standard Model of particle physics to concordance cosmology, many of the most compelling ideas about how the universe works now point toward a rich and elusive dark sector. The 21st Patras Workshop on Axions, WIMPs and WISPs, hosted by The University of Western Australia at its Crawley campus on the banks of the Swan River in Perth, will be held from 9–13 November 2026, and will gather leading experts and emerging researchers to probe this frontier.

    Workshop website

Continuing a distinguished series that began at CERN in 2005, the workshop will focus on innovative theoretical developments, laboratory and astrophysical searches for dark matter and dark energy, and state-of-the-art efforts to uncover new weakly interacting particles and constrain their properties. This edition will highlight the growing Australian and Asia–Pacific contributions to dark sector physics, drawing on UWA’s strong ecosystem in precision measurement, quantum technologies and astroparticle physics.

The workshop will delve into the physics of axions, WIMPs and WISPs in all their facets: direct and indirect detection strategies, novel detector concepts and readout schemes, astrophysical and cosmological probes, and the latest theoretical frameworks that knit these approaches together. By bringing together diverse communities, from quantum sensing and precision metrology to gravitational waves, cosmology and particle theory, the Patras Workshop in Perth aims to spark new ideas, forge fresh collaborations and accelerate progress toward unveiling the dark sector.

Information on previous workshops can be found here.
